SANTIAGO DE CHILE (EFE) -- Three Chilean citizens, two men and a woman, have related their alleged experiences with UFO "close encounters" in 1983 and 1991.

In statements made to "La Tercera" newspaper, Newton de Oliveira, an English professor, Vivian Figueroa, a housewife, and Juan Venegas, a businessman, retold their encounters with alleged aliens.

De Oliveira said that his "encounter" took place on August 23, 1990 while with friends in the Cajun de Maipo, a location on the Andean foothills close to the Chilean capital. According to the story, he split from the group to do some skywatching when he suddenly became unconscious for about 15 minutes. After regaining consciousness, his companions noticed changes in his personality, and due to continued physical complaints, De Oliveira finally underwent hypnotic regression. The sessions indicated that a "close encounter" had indeed taken place.

Vivian Figueroa underwent a similar experience. On February 23, 1983, the housewife felt the urge to go to a small city square in the city of Rancagua, some 80 kilometers south of Santiago. According to her testimony, she was able to observe a strange light gradually approaching her, causing her to faint. When she came to, she was back home in her garden.

By means of hypnotic regression, investigators were able to demonstrate that Vivian had also experienced a "close encounter" and that the date coincided with the day in which one of her brothers had witnessed a UFO over Rancagua.

The most spectacular story is that of Juan Venegas, whose encounter took place the evening June 23, 1991 as he drove his vintage truck along a road linking Santiago to Valparaiso.

"We were happily driving along with my brother-in-law when halfway along a turn we noticed a sort of lighting heading toward us. Lights died and the engine stopped in a matter of seconds, and the vehicle flew through the air, winding up facing the opposite direction in a 180 degree turn," Venegas explained.

The businessman has not yet been able to find a satisfactory explanation for how a two thousand pound vehicle could be taken aloft and left facing in the opposite direction.

Five years later, the case is still under investigation by Chilean ufologists, while Venegas himself continues to drive along the same road, hoping for a repeat performance of the spectacular phenomenon.
