The National UFO Hotline received numerous calls during the night of September 20-21 from people reporting a "large blue white illumination travelling over Melbourne." The object was sighted at about 8:20 pm local time and may have been a large meteor. However, many witnesses state that they have seen meteors and falling stars and this blue white object displayed characteristics not of a meteor.
In another report from the town of Altona, a witness said he sighted a "disc shaped object" at about 10:30 pm on Friday, September 20.
The witness said he first sighted the object while driving and thought it was some kind of fireworks. After stopping and getting out of the car for a better look, he realised that it was "no fireworks. I was standing in the middle of the road and saw that thing..., it looked like a disc or a little like coin shaped... but it was fatter in the center and thinner on the outer rim..., a slight gap was visible between the two half platforms [i.e. apparently upper and lower portions] and in the gap were changing lights .., Red, orange, yellow lights... On the edge of it was these round dots."
He said another car pulled up and the occupants also got out and sighted the same object. The object erratically moved off towards Williamstown and went out of sight. The witnesses departed without exchanging phone numbers.
The National UFO Hotline is attempting to contact the occupants of the second car.
