1996 CROP FORMATIONS BIGGEST, MOST COMPLEX EVER SEEN

[Several mind-boggling crop formations have been discovered in England since mid-July. If these are the work of human hoaxsters, they represent a level of artisty and ingenious stealth that fairly defies imagination. If they are not the work of hoaxsters, then once again we must ask -- where do these formations come from? After years of investigation, no one has yet found the whole answer.

The following text is edited from several press releases issued by Paul Anderson, Director, CPR-Canada (psa@daf.com), the Canadian affiliate office of Circles Phenomenon Research International, the research group established by well-known crop circle researcher Colin Andrews. ISCNI*Flash thanks Paul Anderson for permission to reprint this information, dated August 15, 1996.

Excellent photos of the recent English crop formations can be found on the Web at Crop Circle Connector, http://alpha.mic.dundee.ac.uk/ft/crop_circles/anasazi/connect.html. The largest, most complex crop circle formation ever was discovered on the slope of Windmill Hill, facing the A4 motorway, in Wiltshire, England on July 29. The pattern is a three-armed spiral composed of three Julia Sets with 194 circles, measuring [in total] approximately 1,000 feet in diameter. It is a larger version of the previously discovered "Stonehenge Julia Set" which appeared on July 7. (A Julia Set is a computer-generated fractal, a highly complex mathematical equation relating to the science of Chaos Theory. The famous Mandelbrot Set fractal is composed of an infinite number of Julia Sets). The pattern displays stunningly perfect geometry, with standing centre tufts of crop in some circles, and complex, intricate woven "nests" in the centres of others. Still other circles have "fan" centres, with the crop splayed outward from the centre instead of being flattened in a spiral pattern. These features have also been seen in other formations this year.

The longest-ever crop formation appeared near Etchilhampton in Wiltshire on July 30. Stretching for about 8/10 of a mile (approximately 4,100 feet), it consists of a long central pathway with 14 large circles along it. The largest circle contains an odd triangular "symbol" similar to that in another formation near Roundway, Wiltshire found on July 21 and another large pattern near Chisledon, Wiltshire on August 2.

The British Ministry of Defense, Police, Stonehenge Security and scientists from around the world are continuing to investigate the remarkable "Stonehenge Julia Set", a huge 508-foot diameter spiral with 149 circles, which appeared in a field only a few hundred feet from the famous Stonehenge monument in the early evening of July 7. Witnesses at the site said that the formation was definitely not there at 5:30 that evening, but was there no later than 6:15 pm, meaning it was created in, at most, 45 minutes -- seemingly out of the question for hoaxers (it was also broad daylight). Reports indicate that no one, including Stonehenge Security, the farmer or motorists on the busy A303 motorway which passes the field, saw or heard anything or anyone in the field during that time.

The "DNA Helix" appeared on June 17 under similar circumstances, within a 30-minute time period. This formation, located at Alton Barnes, measured 648 feet long and consisted of 89 circles forming twin interwoven strands that strongly resembled a diagram of the DNA double helix.

Over 80 formations of a wide variety have now appeared in Britain so far this year.

On the morning of August 12, video footage was taken of several "luminosities" hovering over a large 390-foot formation which appeared on the night of August 11 near Oliver's Castle in Wiltshire.

As a result of the incredible new formations this year, interest by the British media and public has again grown. Thousands of people have visited the "DNA Helix", "Stonehenge Julia Set" and "Triple Julia Set" formations, the most spectacular patterns that have ever appeared. Reports have been carried by various British newspapers, radio and television networks.

Meanwhile, in the United States, a 700-foot formation (the largest yet in the U.S.) appeared near Chehalis, Washington on July 17, close to where another pictogram was found in 1994. The pattern resembles "thought bubble" type formations in Britain. In the U.S., circle formations have also now been reported in California, Colorado, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, Ohio, Indiana and Nebraska this year.

A number of circles and pictograms have also been reported in Canada (three small 10-foot circles in grass near Langruth, Manitoba on July 17), Holland, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Lab testing in the U.S. and England on plants from many circle formations in both countries continues to show evidence of "microwave-type energy effects" on plant samples, which are not reproduceable by simple hoaxing.
