[CNI News thanks John W. Ratcliff for sending this recent interview with author Whitley Strieber, conducted in early September, 1995 by Lynn Jennings and posted to Compuserve.]
THE STRIEBER INTERVIEW:
LYNN: Could you give us some personal background about yourself?
WHITLEY: I've written twenty or so novels, done films of the Wolfen, the Hunger and Communion, and been in frequent to constant contact with unknown beings of some sort for years. About this, I have written three nonfiction books, Communion, Transformation and Breakthrough, and one work of fiction, Majestic.
LYNN: What is your earliest memory of an occurrence which you associate with being contacted by alien beings?
WHITLEY: Age two or three. Maybe earlier, not sure.
LYNN: How do you personally handle, from an emotional standpoint, the unkind and less-than-flattering remarks and reviews made by others about your abduction experiences?
WHITLEY: I don't care.
LYNN: What kind of advice could you give contactees who are isolated in their experiences from discussing this subject with friends and/or family who are non-believers?
WHITLEY: Get online and go to it!
LYNN: Larry King has done much to bring the subject of UFOs back into the mainstream media by airing his special on Area 51 last year, and by inviting you, Representative [Steven] Schiff, Phil Klass and C.D.B. Bryan to participate in one of his evening talk shows recently. Were you able to converse personally with Mr. King regarding the contact experience, or any related area surrounding UFOs? If so, could you comment on your conversation with him?
WHITLEY: Not on private conversations. I will say that he is no fool, can't be bought or coerced by anybody, and plays it like he sees it. A very smart, very plain-talking, very good man.
LYNN: What about Representative Schiff?
WHITLEY: His primary interest is openness in government.
LYNN: And C.D.B. Bryan?
WHITLEY: An open-minded member of the Eastern establishment. A rare bird indeed.
LYNN: And Phil Klass?
WHITLEY: Perfect for his role because he cannot bear to be contradicted.
LYNN: What are your views on the Roswell autopsy film?
WHITLEY: The sheaths on the eyes remind me very much of the humanoids with totally dark eyes that I reported in Breakthrough. For this reason, I think the film is genuine unless the stock itself is of recent vintage, which Kodak seems to say it isn't.
LYNN: What do you view your role to be as a contactee? What do you feel their purpose is in contacting you specifically?
WHITLEY: I am trying to make contact work. If their purpose in contacting me was to get to somebody who can tell a story accurately and who is terribly, terribly stubborn, they got the right guy. Once I am onto something important, I will not quit, and when I get oppostion, especially from liars and sharpsters like I see among the debunkers and the government agents, I tend to hang on like a cussed old dog.
LYNN: Do you believe that these visitors are from another universe, planet, dimension? And please elaborate.
WHITLEY: All of the above. And include in that, another time. Because they are extratemporal, there is no meaningful way for us to characterize their point of origin. Even if they are from another planet, they are necessarily also from within us, from outside of time, and from another ... dimension.
LYNN: Do you believe there are home bases of aliens here on Earth, perhaps in the center of the Earth or under the oceans?
WHITLEY: Under sea is a good bet. Excellent place to hide, the abyssal deep. I think that there are visitors who appear entirely human here. My suspicion is that this is not the only human planet. The visitors have indicated to me that there are evolutionary matrices that are based on the elemental mix of planets, and that planets with the same mineral profiles and gravity will, in general, evolve the same sorts of species. But they also contend that conscious species are incredibly rare, and that there are whole galaxies with none.
LYNN: Many contactees have revealed that they were informed by the visitors of changes to occur by the year 2000. Was this revealed to you? If so, could you share any details with us?
WHITLEY: It is clear from my experience that there is going to be accelerated change in the first quarter of the 21st century.
LYNN: In your book Communion, you related an experience in which destruction of the Earth was revealed to you. You were unsure at the time if this was related to future events or if it was some sort of psychological testing being performed by the visitors. Do you have any different perspective on this today?
WHITLEY: Both things must be true. The earth will die one day, whether sooner or later I do not know. Also, seeing something like that is quite a psychological test. It tests the old sanity pretty thoroughly!
LYNN: In the movie Communion, there was a flashback to your childhood in which you were seen holdings hands with children (or possibly aliens?) and playing Ring-Around-The-Rosey. Is this an actual memory or possibly a screen memory? If alien-related, what do you think it means?
WHITLEY: My new book, The Secret School [not yet published], is about the many childhood memories that I have recovered and the way they relate to modern scientific developments and the future.
LYNN: In your book Breakthrough, you state that shortly after your first experiences, you learned that elements of the government had apparently taken a secret interest in the visitors. If possible, could you please elaborate on this?
WHITLEY: I think that the NRO [National Reconnaissance Office] has picked up signals, the Air Force has observed craft, and the NSA [National Security Agency] has monitored various visitor activities on the ground, and made massive attempts to "crack" certain messages. In addition, the Air Force has spent countless billions of dollars on the Aurora program, which is a highly sophisticated airplane with remarkable speed and hovering ability, that was built to emulate the observed performance of UFOs and is probably the most spectacular waste of human resources and national wealth in the history of the species. And I don't think that the government has a clue about who the visitors are, what they are doing, or why they are here -- which is just as well. May they remain clueless and on the outside, where they belong.
LYNN: Do you feel that recent events, such as the Larry King specials, the showing of the Roswell autopsy film, and the many UFO-related films and TV movies being shown in recent years, and scheduled to be shown, point to the fact that the general public is being prepared for a revelation by the government?
WHITLEY: In April the visitors told me by clear aural communication that they were no longer supporting the cover-up. Since then, it has begun to collapse in major ways.
LYNN: In Breakthrough you make what I feel to be a very profound and thought-provoking statement: "It must never be forgotten that contact was not initiated by the visitors. It was initiated by the growing richness of the human mind." This is a very different way to look at this experience, and one of the most positive statements regarding contact with beings that I, personally, have ever heard. How did you arrive at this conclusion?
WHITLEY: We are evolving. As we come to understand things like quantum superposition and the time field, we also begin to see more clearly. A cat may see a hand quite well, but it has absolutely no idea that the hand has five fingers, only that part of it moves differently from the other part. If a cat's intelligence could grow, maybe it could even come to understand number well enough to realize that there were five fingers. Then the hand would look different to the cat and, in fact, the cat's understanding of the hand would be more real. In exactly the same way, our understanding of the visitors is becoming more real.
LYNN: Could you please tell us briefly here your conclusions behind the horror stories that have been associated with alien contact that you elaborate on in Breakthrough?
WHITLEY: We have to keep this in question. The universe is obviously a very big, complicated place, and there could be people here who are less than ideal for us. In any case, it is clear that the visitors' mere presence generates a lot of fear, and that they themselves are very, very secretive. So caution is the byword -- but not rejection.
LYNN: Could you relate to us your Uncle Edward Strieber's telling of the crash at Roswell that you detail in Breakthrough?
WHITLEY: He referred me to other people, such as General Exon. He himself had been aware of the arrival of the debris at Wright, and of what it was. He spoke at some length regarding his conviction that this was known at the very highest levels, and General Exon said the same thing.
LYNN: Why do you think that the visitors have not elected to approach the U.S. government, or some other high-profile government person, and reveal themselves openly? Or have they?
WHITLEY: I believe that this was tried a long time ago. One rumor that I heard and never reported was that one of the visitors at Roswell had been clubbed to death. I note without further comment that there are apparent head injuries on one of the autopsy bodies. Such things do not make for relationships.
LYNN: Are you still being visited as of this date?
WHITLEY: It's a permanent relationship, I think.
LYNN: Do you have any predictions that have been revealed to you that you would like to share with us?
WHITLEY: I am working on a book called The Secret School that will be about this subject.
