NUMEROUS UFOs REPORTED OVER COSTA RICA

[CNI News thanks Skye Turell for forwarding this item, which was posted to the internet on January 10 by John Pike of the Federation of American Scientists. Pike says the following text comes from a Voice of America broadcast by reporter Bill Rodgers in San Jose, Costa Rica, dated January 8, 1997.]

Intro: Costa Rica's leading newspaper reports there has been a rash of unusual sightings of unidentified flying objects in the skies above the Central American nation. As Voice of America's Bill Rodgers reports from San Jose, the newspaper says these UFOs have been seen in recent days by pilots and air traffic controllers.

Rodgers' text: The Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion is a serious publication, not often given to publishing reports about UFOs, space aliens or other phenomena that usually fill the pages of local tabloids. But on Wednesday [Jan 8], the newspaper published an article quoting air traffic controllers at the country's main international airport as saying they have seen unusual flying objects on their radar screens in recent days.

These controllers, who did not give their names, said the sightings began on December 22 and continued until this past Sunday [Jan 5]. The controllers said some of these objects appeared to be flying at extremely high speeds -- much faster than any kind of aircraft -- while others moved very slowly. They said their screens showed these UFOs were flying over different parts of the country.

The controllers had no explanation for what might have caused these sightings. But they dismissed the possibility that their radar screens were picking up unusual cloud formations.

The newspaper article also quoted a pilot who said he saw several UFOs while flying along Costa Rica's Pacific coast on the night of December 22. The pilot, Jorge Arturo Melendez Mora, said he saw three large objects shaped like dishes flying in the sky, illuminated by the light of the moon. He said he watched the objects for about 40 minutes, and that they flew in ways no plane could ever imitate.

A Costa Rican astronomer cited by the newspaper said there appears to be no scientific explanation for these sightings.
