The biggest wave of sightings seen in Costa Rica in at least 22 years began on November 22, 1997, when thousands of residents of the capital city of San Jose watched at least 11 UFOs make various geometric formations in the sky for over 90 minutes, starting at about 1pm. The sky was perfectly clear and blue, and the UFOs appeared white. Two videotapes were made of the sightings.
Further sightings were reported on December 16, although no known videos or photos were taken.
On December 22, from about 12:30 to 3:30pm, thousands of people again watched a dozen or more UFOs make zigzag maneuvers in the sky south of San Jose. Cameramen from two local television channels captured three UFOs, two black and one white, on video, according to Costa Rican ufologist Carlos Vilchez.
Vilchez said he received a phone call from flight controllers of the International Juan Santamaria Airport at 8:30pm that night, telling him that UFOs were showing on radar. He went to the control tower and saw traces of "at least 40" high-flying objects on the screen during a three hour period. Vilchez said there were also conventional aircraft showing on the radar, but at much lower altitude.
According to Itar-Tass, the Costa Rican mass media reported that unidentified flying objects were spotted again on December 24 in the air space over Golfito district, which is 330 kilometres to the south of San Jose.
Carlos Vilchez said more sightings occurred on the afternoon of December 26. He also said that he received a phone call from a television station on the evening of December 30, telling him that the station had received yet another UFO videotape.
Vilchez told radio host Jeff Rense that UFO activity has also been reported around several volcanos in Costa Rica, and UFOs have also been observed going in and out of a lake.
Vilchez said the government of Costa Rica, which has no military, has so far done nothing about the UFO sightings and does not interfere with civilian investigators. There are only about five recognized UFO researchers in Costa Rica, a nation of some 3.5 million people, Vilchez said.
