In the wake of last summer's highly successful Roswell UFO Encounters 97 in Roswell, New Mexico, phone calls are already coming in from around the country, asking about next year's festival.
Deon Crosby, director of the International UFO Museum and Reseach Center, says people want to make sure they get hotel reservations early. Many hotels in the Roswell area were sold out months in advance of the 1997 festival.
Stan Crosby, who chaired the Roswell UFO Encounter Committee for three years, says he and others involved in the huge project are intent on seeing that next year's Encounter builds on the momentum of last summer's event. But Crosby says the task has gotten so huge that he's glad to hand off direction of UFO Encounter 98 to a team of four men who will co-chair the new organizing committee.
Stan Crosby will remain an advisor to the project. Dozens of other volunteers will also participate in the planning and execution of next year's four-day, city-wide festival, scheduled for July 3-6, 1998.
Deon Crosby said that the International UFO Museum and Research Center will organize and produce the UFO Encounter 98 Lecture Series -- the serious side of the event. Encounter 97's lecture series featured a dozen top UFO researchers and drew audiences as high as 900 or more.
Newly appointed co-chair Mike Fisher said that media kits for next year's event will be ready by December. More than 300 media organizations were present for the 1997 festival, he said.
The committee is already seeking corporate sponsorships as well. Fisher noted that Absolut Vodka had a very successful "Absolut Roswell" ad campaign last summer, and he plans to contact Absolut soon about being one of next year's sponsors.
