On January 24, 1998, between the hours of 3:00 and 4:00 am, a man named Sergio Rojas and four friends went to the "Tranque Alfalfal," a dam located in a canyon called "El Cajon del Maipo" some 40 minutes outside of the Chilean capital city of Santiago. El Cajon del Maipo is known to be a hot spot for UFOs.
On the way up to the dam, the five people saw two balls of light pass over them at very high speed. After a few minutes they saw a third one, this time traveling much slower.
Once they reached the dam, they went to a cliff were they could see the river approximately 100 meters below. From that vantage point, they spotted "a cigar/egg shape UFO," estimated to be 18 meters long, coming up the river. It was bright and white in color, but its luminosity did not reflect on the nearby rocks. This UFO was flying very fast and near the water. As it approached, they heard a very high pitched tone that "clogged their ears," and they also felt what they described as a "strange wind," both cold and hot at the same time.
This sighting lasted for only 5 or 6 seconds, the witnesses said. However, it was strange enough to persuade them all to head back home.
On their way down from the dam, heading for the town of San Jose de Maipo, they encountered yet another UFO that was seen floating in the air an estimated 800 meters from them. They stopped the car and got out for a better look. They said the UFO looked like the moon but slightly smaller. The moon itself was also visible at the time. The UFO was white in color. They watched it for about five minutes, during which time it never changed position. However, the sighting ended when the UFO "faded away like a cloud or smoke."
