On March 6, 1998, Professor Stephen Hawking, widely regarded as the world's greatest living physicist, gave a talk entitled "Imagination and Change: Science in the Next Millennium" at the White House in Washington, DC. Hawking's lecture was part of the White House Millennium Series. On stage for the event were President and Mrs. Clinton.
During his talk, Hawking made some unexpected comments on UFOs:
"There is a sick joke that the reason we have not been visited by extraterrestrials is that when a civilization reaches our stage of development it becomes unstable and destroys itself.
"Of course it is possible that UFO's really do contain aliens as many people believe, and the Government is hushing it up. I wouldn't like to comment on that.
"Personally I believe there is a different explanation why we have not been contacted, but I won't go into it here."
Hawking's White House presentation was televised live on C-Span and questions were fielded via the Internet.
Confined to a wheelchair and virtually immobilized by Lou Gehrig's Disease, Hawking speaks with the aid of a computerized voice generator. Though possessing a great sense of humor, he probably had more than humor in mind when he repeatedly alluded to extraterrestrial visitation in the President's company. CNI News hopes that Professor Hawking will expand his statements on this subject at a later date.
