The landing of an egg-shaped craft in the Russian town of Voronezh was revealed by the Soviet news agency TASS, and given wide coverage in this country, prompting UFO buffs to speculate on possible visits by pinheaded aliens with invisibility rays. But ParaNet Information Service of Denver, CO, has given the case a rating of S5/P2, meaning "highly strange, but probably a hoax." ParaNet, a worldwide cooperative of UFO and anomaly researchers tied together by computers, routinely issues ratings of the more publicized reports, in order to narrow the field down to the most important and credible cases. The group's director, Michael Corbin, said that many factors contributed to the low rating of the Russian landing. "The element that stood out the most was the inclusion of a symbol from a previous UFO hoax on the side of the craft in the witnesses' sketch," said Corbin. The symbol, which resembles a stylized letter "H", was seen in a questionable photograph taken in Spain in the late 1970s, and is associated with a complex series of hoax documents circulated throughout Europe and South America, ostensibly by visitors from the planet "UMMO." Other factors taken into consideration by ParaNet were the young age of the witnesses -- most all were teen-agers -- and the rather premature claims of finding minerals that could not have originated on Earth. The minerals turned out to be common iron ore, according to a Russian laboratory. The ParaNet rating of a case is not fixed in stone, says Corbin. "Its always possible that new information may surface, putting the case in a new light. Whenever that happens, we review our rating and change it accordingly." But, he says, he isn't holding out much hope for the Voronezh landing. "Nothing ever came of the UMMO documents and photos, and I fear this latest Russian report will probably follow suit." -- Michael Corbin - via FidoNet node 1:104/422 UUCP: !scicom!paranet!User_Name INTERNET: Michael.Corbin@f428.n104.z1.FIDONET.ORG -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to 'infopara' at the following address: UUCP {ncar, isis, nbires, boulder}!scicom!infopara DOMAIN infopara@scicom.alphacdc.com ADMIN Address infopara-request@scicom.alphacdc.com {ncar,isis,nbires,boulder}!scicom!infopara-request ******************************************************************************** End of Info-ParaNet Newsletter ********************************************************************************
