I have read the book `The Face on Mars', and I found it odd that the author saw reason to use a different computer-enhancement technique to that normally used by NASA. The normal method gave us fantastically sharp pictures, so why was a separate method necessary if not to make the feature look more human than it really was? The pictures looked fake to me. My suspicions were further aroused later in the book when the author started talking about "harmonics of the speed of light" which to my physics is an absurdity. My conclusion was that it was pseudo-science, the purpose being $$$ Regards John Daly Tasmania (Land of the Tasmanian Devils) -- John Daly - via FidoNet node 1:104/422 UUCP: !scicom!paranet!User_Name INTERNET: John.Daly@p0.f2.n1030.z9.FIDONET.ORG -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: paranet!p0.f2.n1030.z9.FIDONET.ORG!John.Daly Subject: Re: Lazar/Area51 Date: 26 Jan 90 04:53:00 GMT > Role of the Moderator As a matter of interest, now that Paranet is international, what criteria do you use with items from outside USA, where both the laws and customs are different. For example, down our way, guys viciously insulting each other is a sign of mateship. The worse the insult, the j greater the sense of mateship. Also, we regard lawyers as a very low form of human life, wheras they hAve a better stAtus in USA. Also, people here don't sue each other very much over defamation, because juries are not sympathetic to plaintiffs who `whinge'. With these points in mind, do you Make allowances for overseas input to Paranet, where the sender is not familiar with US customs or laws. The reason I ask is because I'm getting a lot of US feedback on the GreenHouse Effect, and my replies may not always Accord with your usual rules or criteria. Also, we regard lawyers > as a very low form of human life, wheras they hAve a better John, I understand your question, and will try to respond as clearly as I know how. Let me say for openers that I am NOT trying to flame you. I'm trying to prevent flames from starting. I understand the "mateship" idea you are putting forward. We have many of the same sorts of customs here in the states. I can call you the same name over drinks and we will laugh about it that if I called it to you on the street, you'd slug me. What I'm trying to make clear is the idea of CONTEXT. The banter of your local pub (right word?) is *NOT* my idea of proper presentation of scientific ideas in a forum for serious discussion of ideas. I'm not saying that Paranet is not here for fun and entertainment. It most certainly is (among other things). However, I suggest that due to the mercurial temperments of many participants, we will be more productive, less bickersome (and you will frankly get a MUCH more serious reading from this group) if you treat all members of the discussions with the respect you would show a lady. I'm not talking about fauning, bowing and scraping. Look. I've read these echos for some time now. There is a lot posted here that, in my personal opinion, is less than scholarly. There is a certain percentage that, TO ME, makes no sense at all. However, I think it furthers the causes of discussion and search for truth if we present our arguements couched in terms of: "I believe is in error in his conclusions concerning Global Warming because...". This certainly shows that: A. You know who said what B. You know what the subject is C. You have REASONS to believe as you do D. You know how to present evidence I'm certainly ready to read such posts much sooner than: "Doug Rogers is a moron if he thinks what he said in his post is so". As to your opinions of lawyers: Be that as it may, the American society is highly litigious. While it might be tough for some of the folks over here to sue you, would you not prefer to act in a manner that would not MAKE THEM WANT TO? The only request that I make to you is the request that I make to all users of Paranet: Be polite. Be firm in your beliefs. Be scholarly in your presentation of evidence. If you do this, there is no need for a discussion of legal issues. If you think I'm unreasonable in this stance, let me hear from you. However, this is the shorter of two versions. The original version was broadcast as nine segments on nine days. The version you will see tomorrow has the important seventh segment missing, in which Lazar talks about gravity waves, the antimatter reactor, military potential of the alien Element 115, and his hypnosis sessions with hypnotherapist Layne Keck, in which it was elicited that Lazar might have been subjected to a regimen of drugs and hypnosis by this Government employers. There are a few subtle changes in the other segments as well. Australia Kalgoorlie railway crew reported that a battleship-sized UFO swooped on their speeding train. Thick white smoke pouring from the rear of the UFO blacked out passenger windows on the Transline express for several minutes. A T.I.M.S. (Traffic Information Management System) report from Port Augusta Rail Control Centre confirms that a mysterious craft buzzed three other trains within a 600 km radius on the same night. Here's what Transline driver Lou Beccarelli had to say: "I've worked on the railways for 25 years and I've never seen anything remotely like that enormous contraption. I was the first to spot the thing. We were about 14 kilometres east of Zanthus at 9 pm when I noticed a vertical, pencil-shaped light in the western sky. I quickly realised that this was a white exhaust trail from an object that was hurtling toward us at colossal speed. Within about 20 seconds, it was swooping at the train. The craft was obviously intelligently guided because it deliberately kept pace with us. The thing was ringed with about six white lights - each of them pouring smoke that made me cough. Despite its colossal size, it was totally silent. I got on the two-way to Greg Bourne, the guard. He'd seen the UFO too, as had my co-driver Mick Yuryevich. I stopped the train to report what was happening, but the moment I did so, the craft vanished. However, it left behind it a vast cloud of exhaust smoke. This dissipated into a thin, vapor-like mist which hung above the line all the way to Zanthus." Railway investigators were deeply puzzled by the fact that three other trains were buzzed by UFOs' at precisely 9 pm - the same time as the Zanthus incident. One of the Controllers said; "The other reports came in from crews and passengers at Hesso, Watson and Manguri - all hundreds of kilometres apart. The witnesses all described the same thing: huge objects with lights blazing and pouring smoke. I'd love to know what the hell is going on." =========================================== OZTRAIN.AUS -- Michael Corbin - via FidoNet node 1:104/422 UUCP: !scicom!paranet!User_Name INTERNET: Michael.Corbin@f428.n104.z1.FIDONET.ORG ********To have your comments in the next issue, send electronic mail to******** 'infopara' at the following address: UUCP {ncar, isis, boulder}!scicom!infopara DOMAIN infopara@scicom.alphacdc.com ADMIN Address infopara-request@scicom.alphacdc.com {ncar,isis,boulder}!scicom!infopara-request ******************The**End**of**Info-ParaNet**Newsletter************************
