Date: 7 Mar 90 04:24:00 GMT Does anyone have any information on the following persons? 1) Dr. David Saunders 2) Jeffrey Kretsch 3) What, if anything else, was done on the Zeta Reticuli Incident paper? I got a copy and am working on getting it typed up into a file, but I have also heard from ASTRONOMY Magazine's Editor, Richard Berry, that the article was subsequently discredited. After reading it, I was very impressed with it, even if it was discredited, for a couple of reasons: a) It clearly demonstrates that science and cohorts CAN take a serious look at the phenomena; b) The forum was similar to a debate; Terence Dickinson wrote the original article and Carl Sagan, Steven Soter and others replied and rebutted the various discussions. I see that ParaNet is such a forum and would like to see us get involved in various discussions of similar nature bringing to the table various viewpoints and the basis for why this is reached. Anyone with information on the above questions, please respond here or by netmail via 104/422 or mcorbin@scicom.alphacdc.com Thanks, Mike P.S. Still looking for Mystery Stalks the Prarie. In ANY UFO case, there never seems to be any strong evidence for the "pro" side so it is reasonable for a researcher to consider the evidence and pick his position on the basis of what he has before him, which is what Maccabee did. Now, there would have to be very compelling counter evidence for him to "lose face" by changing his position. AFter all, who is going to pay attention to an expert who vacillates. Macabee is now sort of in a no win situation. If he sticks to "it's all true" he opinion is questioned by those who bring up some of the sticky questions about not only the photos but some of the non-photo items. If he changes his opinion, he winds up losing credibility in terms of future reputation. -- Jim Delton - via FidoNet node 1:104/422 UUCP: !scicom!paranet!User_Name INTERNET: Jim.Delton@p0.f37.n114.z1.FIDONET.ORG -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ddrasin@well.sf.ca.us (Dan Drasin) Subject: The New Project Blue Book Date: 7 Mar 90 07:51:24 GMT The New Project Blue Book -+ From: paranet!f37.n114.z1.FIDONET.ORG!Jim.Speiser -+ Subject: (none) -+ Date: 6 Mar 90 06:16:00 GMT -+ ... Some areas of this enigma need to be treated with some rigidity. -+ I would not recommend such an approach for ParaNet, but for what -+ Pitts is trying to accomplish, it may be just the ticket. Jim I'd appreciate it if you could help clarify for me and possibly for others, just what Pitts *is* trying to accomplish. What are the purposes and MO of Pitts' New Project Blue Book as you understand them. Many of Pitts' statements are so obscure and convoluted at times that I could interpret what he says in various different ways. I'm really hard pressed to understand his intentions and rationale. I have no idea how his "Associate Members" are chosen, since one cannot apply for membership. According to Pitts, all his members "have had in-depth background in Flying Saucer/UFO sighting reports, from 1947 to this date." I'm curious as to what group or class of people might share those specific qualifications, i.e., in-depth background, 1947 to the present? Can you say anything about his project's track record during the past year and a half? Whom has it served? Has it shed any meaningful light on the subject? And can you give me an example of some areas that need to be treated with "some rigidity?" For example, I could probably accept, or at least rationalize the need for, secrecy and compartmentalization in certain very limited contexts -- but problem-solving is certainly not among them. -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gene Gross Subject: Central Florida Sightings Date: 7 Mar 90 11:55:45 GMT Sandy, is this thesis for a college class? Also, if it is for college, are you attending UCF? The reason I ask is that when I attended UCF (it was known as FTU back then) there was quite an active group that discussed UFOs and other similar topics. I don't know if they are still going strong on campus. They had a history going back to when the university first opened and seemed self-perpetuating. Also, I remember that the Orlando Public Library used to have a rather good collection of books on UFOs, including sightings in the Central Florida area. The Oveido lights you might find something on if you are willing to dig back through the editions of the Sentinel. I seem to recall that one of their staffers did a feature piece, but hanged if I can remember the actual date. By way of information, I attended junior and senior high in Orlando--and later I went to UCF for my undergrad degree. My interest in and love for space travel started back then watching the first abortive efforts at the Cape to launch and then watching the early manned mission--much of which I could watch from my backyard. I also know that UFOs were frequently sighted in the Central Florida area--though I suspect that some of them were due to the number of airbases in the area. In particular, at McCoy, they had a U2 unit. Those aircraft would come sailing in without making much noise except a whoosh. With a little altitude, the U2's tended to freak some folks. We service brats knew about them and laughed like crazy when others couldn't ID the craft. Well, enough of old home week. If I can, I'll find out if that group on UCF's campus is still meeting. It wasn't anything official, people just tended to gather together. It was a rather nice way to spend the time before a class--unless it was exam time. ;-) Gene -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gene Gross Subject: Cooper and Paranoia Anonymous Date: 7 Mar 90 11:56:24 GMT -+From: paranet!Clark.Matthews -+Subject: Re: Grist For Conspiracy Buffs -+ -+ >Actually, it's all relatively harmless -- and quite standard procedure -+ >-- but I couldn't help thinking what paranoid minds could do -+ >with it! -+ -+ Hi Gary. Does one have to be paranoid to wonder why IBM, Cypress -+ Semiconductors, AMD and Sandia (AT&T, ostensibly) would pool their resources -+ in the national interest ... An added note, since when have major corporations had the best interest of the people at heart? Ask what motivates a company and the answer is always profit. Sure the PR people come out with the nice little pieces like what Philips 66 did a few years ago. And granted some of the bigger companies are good to work for with all the benies and perqs. But to grant them some sort of benign nature is pure hogwash. That would be like saying that the government is benign. Anyone out there believe that the major companies have a benign nature? -+ -+ ... and conceal their work with the help of the government? I may be -+ paranoid, but you have my full attention on both of these points. -+ -+ Please tell us, what law allows the gov't to use its contractors as shills -+ to avoid public inquiries? What do you folks think? -+ -+ I read about the searches abroad in the NY Times and THAT concerned me. -+ There wasn't anything about the domestic search provisions, though. I think -+ they're shocking. -+ -+ Today, 3/2/90, has been a very disturbing day for me. First I read that -+ some law has been very quietly passed that exempts private companies & -+ consortiums doing government work from the Freedom of Information Act. Now -+ I read about another flimsy pretext for shredding Habeas Corpus and 500 -+ years of common law. -+ -+ Where in God's name is all this stuff coming from and why does no one know -+ about it??!!!! I think part of your answer rests with the "increase" in drugs and lawlessness. When people feel threatened, they run to Uncle for protection. This is something that never ceases to amaze me. Sure Uncle will protect you--for a price. That price is usually some abridgement of our rights. Another thing to think about: the government ran into problems trying to prosecute people on drug charges under criminal law. So what do they do now--they charge them using civil law. The rules are slightly different under civil law than under criminal law. Under criminal law, you have the right not to say anything that might incriminate you. This isn't true for civil law. The burden of proof in criminal law is on the prosecution, not so in civil law. See what they are doing!!? Check out the RICO Act. What is going on is pure trickery and stupidity. And those who are going along with this would do well to remember what Franklin said, those who are willing to give up some of their liberties for security deserve neither. I think that another part of your answer rests in the fact that our elected representative and those that they appoint have forgotten who serves whom. They are our servants; we aren't theirs. That is part of the reason I have consistently voted against the incumbent in every election for the last two decades. They have come to expect that they'll go back every year to live off of us. I say vote them out. Put some new people in, and after they've served two terms, vote them out. We have allowed the development of a professional politician class. That is dangerous, very dangerous. And we can see the results just by looking into some of the skullduggery that has gone on in our government over the past four decades or so. Remember the CIA experiments with LSD? How about the Army's experiments with troops near nuclear explosions? What about ABSCAM or Watergate or Iran-Contra? Then you begin to realize what the danger is. -+From: paranet!f37.n114.z1.FIDONET.ORG!Jim.Speiser -+Subject: Is Cooper all that crazy!? -+ -+ > This is very unsettling news to me. Jim, you do well to remind us to laugh at ourselves once in a while. If it weren't for the serious implications of what is going on the past few days, I'd be inclined to wisecrack myself. I tend to treat reports of 'bad aliens' as paranoia. Humans are famous for fearing and killing anything unknown or not understood. Furthermore, the show Unsolved Mysteries mentioned that some of the Gulf Breeze photos were taken in the presence of witnesses who COULDN'T see the UFOs as the guy was snapping the pictures. This sounds very suspicious -- something consistent with double exposures. The reason why I sent this message, in the first place, is because the media here were getting very excited about this sighting. It was almost becoming another "Mundrabilla" and I thought I'll warn you guys before things get out of control. By the way Jim, was there any mention of this "UFO" on your TV or in print media? You see, what happens is this - if one TV stations gets "hot" news then the rest of them don't want to be left out so the story gets bigger and bigger. During the "Mundrabilla" investigation, for example, our investigators were going in an out Channel 7 (that was the TV station who got involved with Knowles family) and were driven around in 7's vehicle. The Channel 9 crew followed them in their vehicle ( with cameras and reporters on standby) wherever they went, hoping they'd get an opportunity to film the Knowles vehicle and talk to the family.
