As for the military aspect, I think that you might be in the right ball park there. Please note my qualifier--might. Anything we say about UFOs is usually speculation. We don't know for sure that these craft come from another planet. But I have thought about the military aspects of some of the observed UFO behavior. Then I have to ask what military advantage is there in a backwater planet of the galaxy? Well, maybe plenty if there is a real war going on somewhere out there (again, I want to reiterate that we don't know that they come from elsewhere). As you pointed out, we used backwater islands in the Pacific for staging areas and airbases during WWII. Now let me take a real flight of fancy for a moment. I will grant anyone that none of what I'm about to say is fact. Rather it is the speculation of an active mind and imagination. I have heard more than one respected authority say that the development of modern man came very rapidly--a bit too rapidly. The sudden development of our brain is without easy explanation. So here is where I start. Suppose a race of beings--or couple of races on friendly terms--comes to Earth in our dim history. They find an evolving species of hairy animals and test them. They, the aliens, find that this species of animals is just what they've been looking for and begin to manipulate the genes. This process occurs over several millennia. Then one day, while on a return visit to finish the project, they genetically engineer the genes to produce a rapid growth of the brain. Further, they encode into the genes a 'program' that at some future date will begin unlocking the full potential of those brains. Then they leave. Now some several thousands of years later, these aliens are back waiting for the 'program' to start taking effect. They pick up a few of the now hairless animals and test them to determine the progress of the genetic engineering and coding they've done. They make some minor adjustments here and there to some of the abductees. When not doing this, they are doing other things. But mainly they are waiting. Waiting for what!? Glad you asked. Waiting for a race of beings that they can use as mercenaries and 'pathfinders' in the further exploration of the universe. Not that we should be thrilled with this since it will be at their beck and call. Again, this was only a flight of fancy--pure speculation. I tried to pull in some of the things I know and fit them together. Still, UFOs elude me. I don't think that we will know much about them until we get our (we/our means us, the public) on one, and the possible occupants. So what'cha think? Gene Gross -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: postmaster Subject: Ed Walter's Implication Date: 13 Jun 90 16:42:44 GMT >From: uunet!sparta!esanborn@ncar.UCAR.EDU (Edward Sanborn) The following small news brief appeared in the Monday, June 11, 1990 edition of the Boston Herald. I have NOT checked the story out but since I really haven't had time in the last day or so to check it out I figured I'd post it to the net to get the word out. I must say, I met Ed when he was on his book tour as he came through the Boston area. I found Ed to be quite amiable. I appeared on a local talk show with him (heck, I'm open minded, I didn't appear as a Gulf Breeze spokesperson anyway, just giving my local MassMufon two cents worth) and he handled a phone in by Phil Klass very well. He was informed moments before the airing of the show (The Good Day Show with host Eileen Prost) that Phil was going to be calling in. He almost didn't go on air because he didn't want to take part in a format which catered to a skeptics forum, especially Phil Klass because he knows that Phil will sometimes revert to personal attacks to accomplish the task at hand - casting doubt on a case which he has very little counter evidence against. Either way, I try not to subscribe to either side of the coin when it comes to Gulf Breeze - at least not publicly. This is a profoundly complex case. The parts that still leave a huge amount of doubt/suspicion on my mind are those wonderful double exposure looking polaroids and the fact that only one photographer (with a publicly known identity) has come out with them. Then of course we have the myriad of other witnesses in the area. Whatever is going on it's safe to say it isn't all a hoax. The News/Brief: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODEL UFO found in Fla. home Pensacola, Fla. __ A model flying saucer made of foam plates reportedly has been found in the former residence of a man whose UFO photographs two years ago focused worlwide attention on sightings in Florida. Ed Walter's, 43, who wrote a book about his supposed encounters with aliens and their paralyzer rays, insisted he knows nothing about the model 'unidentified flying object' or how it got in the attic of his former res- idence. The Pensacola News Journal printed several pictures yesterday taken by staff photographers who used the model to show what appear to be UFO's flying above treetops and a house. Walters conceded the photos arew similar to the ones he took in 1987. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's it. Very short, and I'm not inclined to comment too much more until I call the appropriate parties. Thought everyone would like to see it first. I'm fascinated to see that this was picked up by one of the national wire\ services. BTW, the source simply states 'Compiled from wire reports' and is alongside two other national interest stories originating in the Soviet Union, and a crime related story from New York. INTERESTING that this negative article has been carried when I don't really remember any newspaper type publicity about the case when it was gaining 'worlwide positive attention'. -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: postmaster Subject: Re: GB Video Date: 13 Jun 90 16:43:05 GMT >From: gatech!mcnc.org!convex!swarren (Steve Warren) Jim.Delton said: -+There is something on almost all those GB photos that just doesn't ring -+true. Just what it stands for -- an Unidentified Flying Object. It could be an atmospheric oddity, it could be an alien craft, it could be something entirely different. I haven't seen enough proof to push me either way. I would like to find out that they are indeed visitors or aliens, but I haven't yet. Many want to display them as entirely explainable, but their persistence and the explanations and the public's refusal to believe the explanations force me not to merely accept UFOs as nothing out of the ordinary. - Mark G. -- Michael Corbin - via FidoNet node 1:209/722 UUCP: !scicom!paranet!User_Name INTERNET: Michael.Corbin@f0.n9.z9.FIDONET.ORG -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: paranet!f0.n9.z9.FIDONET.ORG!Michael.Corbin Subject: Questionnaire Date: 14 Jun 90 02:02:00 GMT * Forwarded from Uucp, 209/722 * Originally to Michael Corbin * Originally dated 02 Jun 90 23:23:14 >From scicom!ncar!violet.berkeley.edu!chalmers >From: chalmers@violet.berkeley.edu (John H. Answer=1 3. Answer=2 4. Answer=3 5. Answer=2 6. Answer=1 7. Answer=3 Ambiguous question. Report to whom? Co-workers, Police, Governement? 8. Answer=2 Badly worded question: authentic in reference to which model of UFOs? Does authentic mean pictures ofextraterestrial vehicles, paranormal visitations, or merely honest and non- fabricated? 9. Answer=1. Badly worded question: as phrased, the question implies a negative value judgement. A social worker friend has informed me that there are many personality traits which might lead to non-veridical reports of communication. These traits are not necesarily indicative of mental illness and do not require clinical intervention. 10. Answer=1 I believe that a residual category of unexplained was reported by Blue Book. The question is ambiguous as it implies either that no one in the AF admitted any unexplained sightings or else the Blue Book people disobeyed orders. Told when? 11. Answer=2 The Microchloranthropogenetic theory is a viable, if non-parsimonious and question-begging, alternative to the Judaeo- Xian-Islamic genesis myths. I am unconvinced by any more contemporary evidence for contact. 12. Answer=2 I dont know how much is being spent and what kind of research projects have been proposed on which to spend the money. Merely throwing money at problems seldom solves them. 13. Answer=1. 14. Answer=2. This question is ambiguous as important is undefined. 15. Answer=2. 16. Answer=1 17. Answer=4 18. Answer=2 19. Answer=1 20. Answer=3 People are undefined. I think most educated Americans want to believe in life elswhere. Many fundamentalists reject the idea. 21. Answer=4 This is also a model-dependent question 22. Answer=2 Current or past ? 23. Answer=2 24. Answer=4 25. Answer=4 By definition! Are you implying that UFOs will always be an inexplicable mystery? 26. Answer=1 27. Answer=1 28. Answer=1 29. Answer=3 This question is poorly phrased and model-dependent. 30. Answer=1 Poorly phrased question. Reports could be due to many factors including dreams, induced fantasizing, true hallucinations and/or real events. Finally, what do you believe UFOs to be? I believe that they are a mixture of many types of physical and psychological events. Some of these may be truly new and unknown phenomena, while others will turn out to have explanations mundane by current knowledge. I would like to believe in the physical and extraterrestrial origin hypotheses, but the evidence does not convince me. As I am rather agnostic about most of UFOlogy, I found it hard to answer some of the questions.
