Building A Search or Print Query On-line Documentation This is perhaps the most powerful feature of the program (and the one that may have the most bugs!). A Query is a condition, or group of conditions, that must be met in order for an overall true condition to be returned. A condition is nothing more than selecting a field, an Operator, and a Modifier. Fields are obvious, so let's look at Operators... Operators These may be remembered from your school math days. You say, though, that letters aren't numbers... but letters are numbers to a computer, since each letter generates a number assigned to it. We can then evaluate our conditions of less than, equal, etc. = Equal To A value must be exactly equal. <> Not Equal To A value must not be equal. < Less Than A value must be less than. > Greater Than A value must be greater than. <= Less Than or Equal A value must be less than or equal. >= Greater Than or Equal A value must be greater than or equal. $ Contains String A value must contain a partial string. Entering AGENCY NAME $ Temple City will reveal all records containing Temple City anywhere in the agency field, while AGENCY NAME <> Temple City will reveal all records except those beginning with Temple City. Using numbers you can search a particular frequency range by entering FREQUENCY >= 481.000 and locate all frequencies greater than or equal to 480.000 mhz. Modifiers Modifiers extend the condition and require the first condition to be true AND a second condition to be true, OR a third condition to be true. If we say that condition one must equal 5 AND condition 2 must contain Temple both conditions must be true OR the frequency must equal 483.9875 mhz. If condition one and two are true a match is located... if condition 3 is true but not 1 and 2 a match is still located because you have established an EITHER / OR condition. It is best that you work with these and learn the power that each contains. Printing A Query The Query is no different, however, records can only be tagged for printing in this manner from the Print Menu. A printed query is only available to registered users. The first menu choice allows you to create an ASCII delimited text file directly from a Scanner Buff! .MDF data file. Only the 8 significant fields are written. This feature allows users to export data and then import the data into other database or word processing programs. Word Perfect, Lotus, RapidFile, and Paradox are just some of the possible programs that may use this file format. Most importantly, Scanner Buff! On-Line, the BBS door version of Scanner Buff!, uses these files without requiring modification. The second menu choice allows users to import an ASCII delimited text file into any .MDF file created by Scanner Buff! This process is the reverse of the first choice. Imported data *MUST* be in Scanner Buff! order. Please refer to the documentation for more information on this point. The last menu choice allows users to reorganize an ASCII delimited text file into the proper Scanner Buff! field order. The process requires that you know what each field in your text file represents, such as agency, frequency, callsign, etc., and no error-checking is done to verify what you enter. Regardless, this is a powerful feature because it allows for the direct importation of data created or maintained by almost any other database or word processing program. All records contained within the selected .MDF file will be exported to a disk file without regard for deletion status of individual records. An ASCII delimited file is a standardized format whereby each 'field' is written to the file contained within the double-quote character. Individual fields are separated by a comma. Answer the input and output file prompts, and then a fill in form will appear asking you to instruct Scanner Buff! on the positions of your fields, as mentioned above. Enter this information. The last item asks you for the number of fields in your data file. There are only 8 significant fields in Scanner Buff!, however, yours may contain data beyond the eigth field. Scanner Buff! will be making a temporary data file containing all of your fields, and then it will selectively extract data from the locations, or positions, you have previously identified. Be sure to enter the total number of fields in your data file, or failure will occur! Your data file will be rearranged and output in an ASCII delimited file. The purpose of a Group is to separate individual records from one another when two records compared belong to a different type of "service". "Service" refers to what the frequency is used for. An example of a service is the comparision and obvious difference between a police frequency and a fire frequency. Scanner Buff! allows you to classify each record under a unique "Group". Later, when you experiment with Groups and open one you will quickly find that you may only work with records belonging to the same Group. A Group is nothing more than a filter capability inherent to Scanner Buff! Pressing F7 presents a pop-up list of Group names or identifiers that you may assign to any record. This is the pop-up box that you see beneath this help screen. This is a scrollable list that will, upon pressing [Enter], transfer the contents of the highlighted field directly into the record you are working with, or the prompt currently before you. Once this has occurred the Group will have been identified within the record, or searched for in an attempt to establish a filter. One of the key features of Groups is your ability to add your own Group names to this pop-up list. To add a Group to this list all you do is press the INSERT key and the bottom of your screen clears and presents you with a prompt requesting the name of your Group. Pressing [Enter] saves the new entry; pressing ESC aborts. You may also feel free to edit any Group already in the list. This is done by pressing the SPACE bar. Operation is identical to inserting. Added Groups are automatically placed in proper order once the screen changes. Selecting a Group is as simple as placing the highlighter on the Group name and pressing [Enter]. The contents of the field will be transferred automatically. Of course, ESC aborts the process. If you are selecting a Group for a newly added or edited record it is important to remember that any changes in the Group name are not saved until you press F10. This only applies if you are adding or editing a database entry and not Opening A Group. After selecting a Group as a filter (from the File Menu) you will be given the option of "tracking" the filter on the View All Screen. Full-time tracking is noticibly slower when working with a large database, and thus, the option. In essence, what occurs while tracking is that any time you move within the database the software must locate the next record belonging to the Group. On slow computers, and most definitely when using a floppy system, a the screen will seem to add data a section at a time. This is completely natural. The importance of this option is that normally the View All screen does *NOT* track the Group. Some users, however, prefer that the Group is tracked at all times. Databases containing less than 5000 records perform well, while those containing more than 5000 begin to slow down enough to be annoying (sorry folks... I didn't write Clipper or dBase, so we all have to live with it!). Still Don't Get It? When the concept of Groups was first envisioned I quickly thought of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in California. This agency has a minimum of 60 radio channels. This is a large system! Each radio channel has a unique number that the agency has assigned to it for reference. Imagine, if you will, 60 channels stored in a database containing 5000 records and you only want to work with L.A. County Sheriff... this is what a Group is for!!! Now, all of your activity is restricted to only 60 records of 5000. In order for this to work, you must first assign a Group name to each record.
