MEDFER02.TXT The Top End: "ON THE AIR," 1600 - 1705 kHz (LOWDOWN, Dec. 94) John H. Davis, Box 367, Warm Springs GA 31830 Welcome! This is something of an interim listing, pending finalized plans, but with the DX season already at hand, it seemed desirable to have MedFERs represented with as current a listing as practical. Many thanks are in order to Craig Healy for his efforts with this column. The information in this month's list is compiled from Craig's data, and updated in part from The MedFER News (c/o Mark Burkart, 6713 Bellaire, New Orleans, LA) and from correspondence to the Notebook column. In many ways, that eclectic mix of sources highlights the peculiar nature and mission of this column. MedFERing is not strictly longwave. But, given that much LF experimenting is done under the same type of Part 15 rules as MF experimenting, and given that much of the circuitry, most of the techniques, and many of the operators overlap between the two, it's only natural that the Lowdown should give it some coverage. Exactly what sort of coverage will ultimately depend on your wishes, and how much news you contribute. It would not be seemly for this column to compete with the MedFER News, nor for it to take away from LF coverage, and I hope it will do neither. Mark's newsletter, being quarterly, can go into more depth on matters of interest to those specializing in MF. The Lowdown, being monthly, is a good way to keep DXers updated (fairly quickly) on frequency or schedule changes. So, I hope all MedFER operators will do exactly that—keep us updated! You can write to me at the address above, or use the same electronic means as listed in the Notebook column. (Mark also checks in on the Longwave/Part 15 BBS, so you can pass information to him there at the same time.) Your participation makes it all work. {ADDITIONAL NOTE: Some of the info from Craig's files got lost as I was preparing this column for print. I'm including Craig's entire original list at the end of this file, so you can fill in the gaps (+) yourself. Be wary of listings dated prior to 1/94. A completely updated list will appear in the January edition of The LOWDOWN, and afterwards here as well.} FREQ ID OPERATOR/LOCATION SKED/MODE 1606.25 2IQ Bill de Carle, 29 Sommet Vert, St Adolphe d’Howard PQ (BPSK) 1630.64 IE Brice Anderson, POB 14, Lancaster IL 62855 (Should be on now.) 1631.40 TI Rex Wilson, 4550 Vernetti Ln, Kingman, AZ 86401 1633.50 R Hardeeville, SC 1637.93 RR Steve McGreevy, 45 Elda Dr, San Rafael, CA 9490 (Returns in Dec.) 1638.30 SEA J. Who's Hearing Whom? (And Other News) • Ken Cornell says he's not sure who he's hearing. His new active antenna (with remote tuning and regeneration control) is "hotter than Hades, and am hearing stations I could never hear before." But somewhere around the middle of the band is a signal signing MEL (space) E that Ken wonders about. Could this be our old Venezuelan friend MER with yet another keyer problem? Has anyone else heard it? • Brice Anderson (IE) is hearing ABC, SEA, SC, and VA in mid-November. • Todd Roberts (ABC) hears SEA more consistently than last month, and thinks this is likely to be a good season for MedFERs. Todd also reports some additional work on drivers for Class D-E finals, and should have an interesting and useful article on the subject for us when time permits. Watch future editions of The LOWDOWN. One thing that should help this season is the FCC's additional delays in working out assignments for the expanded AM band. That could be resolved at any time, of course, but it doesn't seem likely too many broadcasters will undertake serious construction during the winter. (*SINCE THIS FILE WAS PREPARED, THE ALLOTMENTS FOR THE BAND EXPANSION WERE ANNOUNCED. DOWNLOAD EXPAND.TXT FROM THIS BBS AFTER NOV. 22.) So, who are you hearing on MF these days? Keep us posted. ****************************************************************************************** {Craig Healy's original list:} 510.5 ABC Hilton Head, SC Todd Roberts, WD4NGG AM 1620 GK near Kailua-Kona, HI Herb Vanderbeek, WY6G (5/93) 1625 JR West Hartford, CT John Ramsey, N1AKB (1/94) 1630.64 IE Lancaster, IL Brice Anderson, W9PNE (1/94) 1631.4 TI Kingman, AZ Rex Wilson (1/94) 1633.5 R Hardeeville, SC Joe Oliver, KB4ODE (4/94) 1636 RGQ Berwick, PA Shel Cleaver (1/94) 1637.6 NH Monroeville, NJ Norm Harbison, Jr. K2NH (11/93) 1637.9 RR (DAID) San Rafael, CA 0700-1400 Steve McGreevy (7/93) 1638.3 SEA Warm Springs, GA John Davis KD4IDY (4/94) 1638.75 0KVL North Branch, MN Tom Lambert, N0KVL (12/93) 1639.1 XP (unid) hrd NY, WV (1/94) 1640.3 R San Jose, CA Jim Vandermaaten (10/93) 1641.97 LEK Aitkin, MN Lyle Koehler, K0LR (1/94) 1642.7 MS (May be off)Rochester, NH Mike Staines, WA1PTC (11/93) 1646.5 Y New Orleans, LA Mark Burkart KB5GVK (1/94) 1648.5 CSV Fernandina Beach, FL Bob Bricker, K4CSV (11/93) 1650.62 G4 Palo Alto, CA Herb Vanderbeek, WY6G (5/93) 1651.58 G3 Fresno, CA Boyd Skillin, K6MGX (1/94) 1651.7 GEO Winter Garden, FL George Reaves, KB4WL (1/94) 1654.7 EK3 Sunnyvale, CA Jim Ericson, KG6EK (10/93) 1655.82 CQ Santa Rosa, CA (12/93) 1656.7 VA Smith Mt.
